Fatal Bronx Car Accident Leaves Police With Questions

Sometimes the details of a car accident are obvious. Whether through talking with those involved or simply by looking at the scene after the crash, one can determine what caused the accident. In other cases, however, the accident may not be so self-explanatory. Such is the case with a fatal accident in the Bronx recently, where one driver left before police could get his side of the story.

According to the NY Daily News, the accident happened on the Cross Bronx Expressway at around 3:45 a.m. Two similar Infiniti G35 cars were traveling alongside each other, one in the center lane and one in the right lane, when the one on the right struck the back-end of a UPS tractor trailer.

The collision sent the other Infiniti into another truck. While the initial collision killed that driver and injured a passenger, the driver of the second Infiniti left the scene on foot.

Officials aren’t sure whether alcohol played a role in the New York accident or if the two cars were racing when the collision occurred. Because the driver left his license in the vehicle, they are confident he will be located and the details will become known.

The initial collision caused the UPS truck to sideswipe a second tractor trailer. The first Infiniti was then pinned between the UPS truck that it hit and the wall, where it was crushed. The driver was rushed to Jacobi Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His passenger, a 23-year-old woman, suffered unspecified but non-life-threatening injuries.

Hit-and-run accidents are relatively common. Most drivers who choose to leave the scene of an accident take their vehicle. In this case, the officers will likely have an easier time locating the driver because he left his car and his license behind.

When a hit-and-run accident happens, the driver who flees can be held criminally responsible for failing to remain at the scene of the accident. If found to be at fault for the accident, the driver can be held financially responsible for the injuries that occurred as a result of the accident.
