Largest Reported NJ Personal Injury Settlement during the Court’s 2022-2023 term

Major Bus Crash in Mount Olive Township, NJ on May 17, 2018

A school bus carrying fifth graders from a nearby middle school crashed into a dump truck on Route 80 on Thursday morning. 38 students and 7 adults were on their way to a field trip at Waterloo Village when the collision occurred.

Out of the 38 students and 7 adults who were on the bus coming from East Brook Middle School in Paramus, New Jersey, 2 passengers were killed, and 43 others were taken to a nearby hospitals: Morristown Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Health, St. Clare’s Dover Hospital and St. Clare’s Denville Hospital for treatment. Some were considered to be in critical condition and undergoing surgery as of Thursday. The 2 passengers who were killed in the accident were identified as a teacher and a student of East Brook Middle School. The bus accident occurred in Mount Olive Township which is only about 50 miles west of New York City.

Information regarding who was at fault for the horrifying crash is still unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board is still gathering information needed for the investigation. The front of both the dump truck was said to be mangled, and the status of the truck driver is also unknown. The school bus was lying on its side in the median of Route 80. Authorities are also investigating whether the school bus made an illegal U-turn before the crash.

According to CBS News New York, the Mount Olive Mayor stated “I have never seen anything like that. I can only describe it as horrific”.
