Steven Benvenisti, an attorney and partner at Davis, Saperstein & Salomon, P.C., recently penned an op-ed for NJ.com, urging lawmakers to be proactive in advancing legislation that would reduce drunk driving accidents.
In 2021, Congress passed The HALT Drunk Driving Law, which would require anti-drunk driving technology in new vehicles. Unfortunately, the Department of Transportation failed to create a federal motor vehicle safety standard before the deadline, so the law cannot currently be enforced. Benvenisti blames misinformation about cost and government overreach for slowing the implementation of the law.
“Safety must come first,” Benvenisti writes in the recent op-ed. “Implementing anti-drunk driving technology can save more than 10,000 lives every year. I urge readers to learn about the HALT Drunk Driving Law and to ask lawmakers to support its advancement and oppose any rollback efforts.”
A Fierce Advocate for Drunk Driving Victims
This is a highly personal issue for Benvenisti as he is a survivor of a drunk driving accident. While walking with friends during his senior year of college, he was struck by a drunk driver and thrown nearly 70 feet. He endured a lengthy recovery, which involved being hospitalized for several months, undergoing 15 surgeries, and learning to walk again.
“During that period, I made a pledge,” Benvenisti writes. “If I fully recovered against all odds, I would dedicate my life to preventing others from suffering what my family and I endured because of one selfish drunk driver.” As a drunk driving accident lawyer representing victims, as well as national ambassador for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and chair of the MADD New York – New Jersey – Pennsylvania Advisory Board, he does exactly that.
A fierce advocate for victims of drunk driving car accidents, Benvenisti urges state and local lawmakers to do their part in preventing future drunk driving crashes. We have the technology; we need legislators to do their part to ensure it is implemented in vehicles going forward.
