New Jersey Strives to Educate Teens about the Dangers of Drunk Driving

We all know automobile safety is important, that a safe drive can become a fatal accident in seconds. Many types of negligent behavior increase the chances of having an accident, with drunk driving as one of the most dangerous. Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs has been a problem for decades, and has claimed the lives of those individuals who chose to drive while impaired and the drunk driving victims who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Ocean County Board of Health recently sponsored an Anti-DUI program to not only educate teen drivers, but to let them see the effects of drunken driving with their own eyes. The awareness program simulated conditions an impaired driver would experience by using “fatal vision” goggles provided by the Brick Township Police Department. Also, members of the New Jersey Highway Traffic and Safety Administration supplied information about “Drive Sober or Be Pulled Over,” an initiative aimed at getting drunk drivers off the road.

The event began on Friday, January 20. Ocean County Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little cut the ribbon at a three-dimensional display titled “Drinking, Drugging and Driving.”

Despite drunk driving laws and enforcement initiatives, it is ultimately up to individuals to choose not to drink and drive. That’s why we believe programs such as this that attempt to educate new drivers are essential in making our highways safer for all motorists.
