Kia Recalls Vehicles Over Faulty Airbags

According to an article on msnbc.com, Kia Motors recently announced that 145,755 cars are being recalled due to faulty airbag systems. The recalled cars include 95,596 Kia Optimas from model years 2006-2008 and 50,186 Kia Rondos from 2007-2008. The driver’s side airbag in these models may not deploy properly due to a flawed spring that may become damaged over time, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a recall alert.

Consumers expect their automobiles to be reasonably safe in the event of a crash. Safety features, such as seat belts and airbags, are expected to work properly. If they do not, drivers and passengers may be subjected to serious injuries.

The problem was discovered “as a result of the regular monitoring of field data to ensure product quality,” Kia said. The company also said in a statement that it was not aware of any airbag non-deployments or injuries associated with the problem to date.

Faulty automobile parts can cause serious motor vehicle accidents. In this case, the defect has the potential to make injuries received in an accident far worse.

According to the NHTSA, Kia reported the problem in mid-January and the recall should begin in March. Affected customers can have the faulty airbag system repaired at Kia dealerships for free.
