Why Are Risperdal Lawsuits Being Filed?
According to news reports, men and their families filed more than 13,000 lawsuits in recent years against Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Risperdal. Most of those lawsuits have been litigated in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.
The lawsuits allege that Johnson & Johnson knew that Risperdal could cause breast growth in men – a condition called gynecomastia – but failed to give doctors and patients an adequate warning about this risk.
Several Risperdal lawsuits went to trial in recent years. One case resulted in a $70 million verdict in July 2016 in favor of a Tennessee man who claimed that Risperdal caused him to grow female-sized breasts.
What Is Risperdal?
Risperdal (risperidone) is an atypical antipsychotic medication. Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals unit sells the drug in the United States. Doctors prescribe Risperdal for treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and irritability associated with autistic disorder.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Risperdal for adults in 1994 and for children in 2007. However, due to the risk of strokes and other side effects, the FDA has never approved the drug for treatment of elderly patients who suffer from dementia.
In 2013, Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay $2.2 billion to resolve allegations that the company had, in fact, illegally promoted Risperdal for the “off-label” use of treating elderly patients with dementia.
What Are Risperdal Side Effects?
Risperdal carries many side effects, including fatigue and weight gain. However, the most serious side effect is gynecomastia, a painful and psychologically damaging condition that causes men to develop breast tissue.
A study published in 2006 in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology reported that risperidone increases a man’s prolactin levels. Prolactin is a hormone that the pituitary gland produces. High levels of prolactin can lead to a hormonal imbalance that causes gynecomastia.
While the 2006 study focused on children who developed gynecomastia after using risperidone, other studies have found the problem among older males. In 2014, researchers wrote in a letter to the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology that they had found an increased risk of gynecomastia among men between the ages of 40 and 85 who used the drug.
Gynecomastia can cause pain and tenderness in the breasts as well as psychological damage, especially among young boys. A male who suffers from gynecomastia may need to undergo surgery to develop breast growth.
What Compensation Can You Pursue in a Risperdal Lawsuit?
If you or your loved one suffered gynecomastia after taking the Risperdal antipsychotic drug, you may be entitled to damages that include:
- Past and future medical expenses, including the costs of physical and mental health treatment
- Lost income and diminished future earning capacity
- Pain and suffering, including emotional anguish
- If warranted, punitive damages.
